Since starting his blog The Big Fashion Guy, which focuses on fashion for big-and-tall gentlemen, Detroit-native and menswear stylist Michael-Anthony Spearman has been dishing out advice about style and trends. With seasonal dinner parties on the horizon, we spoke with Spearman about his tips for being a stylish guest. Along with making sure your dining etiquette is in check, his biggest takeaway is dressing to impress. “You never know who could be there,” he says. “If you’re single, you can impress the ladies.” From sporting a sleek jacket, embracing unexpected accessories, or experimenting with new colors, there are plenty of fashion tricks up Spearman’s sleeves to help set you apart from other gentlemen at any party.

Make a Statement

Good conversation is often the cornerstone of a successful party. A way to spark dialogue is with accessories that create interest. “You always want to have something that will stand out,” Spearman says.  Look for a unique tie clip or watch. Try the Shinola Runwell Sport Chronograph, $1,025 at Shinola, 441 W. Canfield St., Detroit; shinola.com or Brooks Brothers Sterling Silver Tie Bar, $98 at Brooks Brothers Somerset Collection, 2801 W. Big Beaver Rd., Troy; 248-643-6888; brooksbrothers.com

Cover Up

Despite your impeccable table manners, accidents do happen. To help disguise mishaps, look for neckwear in dark hues like black or charcoal. “If you spill something, it’s easy to conceal,” says Spearman. Try Cyberoptix Tie Lab Black Herringbone Silk Necktie, $48 at Cyberoptix Tie Lab, 1440 Gratiot Ave., No. 2A, Detroit; 855-522-8437; cyberoptix.com

Dress for the Season

Spearman says heavy wools, velvets, corduroys, and tweeds are all appropriate fabrics to wear this season. Bold prints like paisley and warm fall colors are also fashionable. Try Brooks Brothers Paisley and Dot Pocket Square, $65 at Brooks Brothers Somerset Collection, 2801 W. Big Beaver Rd., Troy; 248-643-6888; brooksbrothers.com

Find the Right Fit

Spearman says a tailored suit that’s seasonal, appropriate, and sleek will help you stand out from other gentlemen at any party. A comfortable belt that can be adjusted once you’ve stuffed yourself with food and drinks might also come in handy. Try Michael Kors Oval Ring Belt with Turntip, $68 at michaelkors.com

Finish with Fragrance

“No look is complete without a fresh haircut and trim,” says Spearman. To complement this, he suggests investing in a seasonal cologne. Try Armani Code Eau de Toilette, $68 for 1.7 fl. oz. at giorgioarmanibeauty-usa.com
