Detroit Vegan Soul, a restaurant that specializes in 100 percent plant-based southern comfort food, will open a new location this December in northwest Detroit’s Grandmont Rosedale neighborhood.
“We get guests from all over Michigan and beyond, but we get a significant amount of people from the west side of (Detroit),” says Kirsten Ussery-Boyd, co-owner of Detroit Vegan Soul. “We wanted to do something that would be convenient to a lot of our guests.”
She says the new restaurant, to be located at 19614 Grand River Ave., will feature an intimate aesthetic with unique decor that is specific to the Grandmont Rosedale community.
“One of the things that we hear consistently from our guests is ‘it’s comfortable here,’ ‘it’s friendly,’ ‘it’s welcoming,’ so we’re going to create that same kind of vibe (at the new restaurant),” Ussery-Boyd says.
While the Grandmont Rosedale location is still in the planning stages, when complete, it is expected to have about 32 seats, with the possibility for additional outdoor seating as well.
The new restaurant will feature similar menu items to Detroit Vegan Soul’s original space in West Village, located at 8029 Agnes St., that are made from fresh ingredients delivered daily from partnering urban farmers and produce markets.
The Soul Platter, a dish that consists of mac-n-cheese, smoke collards, maple glazed yams, black-eyed peas, and a cornbread muffin; seitan pepper steak; a “catfish” tofu sandwich; a smothered tempeh entrée; and more, will be available when the Grandmont Rosedale restaurant opens.
“Whether you’re vegan, vegetarian, or an omnivore, you’ll love the food,” Ussery-Boyd says. “It’s still comfort food, but you can feel a little better about yourself because it’s a healthier version of comfort food.”
She says Detroit Vegan Soul will hire at least 20 employees, including an assistant manager, servers, and cooks, to staff the Grandmont Rosedale location.
